Residents of Peshawar experiencing disruptions in cellular internet services for over a week

Location: Peshawar Time: 9 pm to 6 am Description: Residents of various areas in the provincial capital have been experiencing disruptions in cellular internet services for over a week, leading to inconvenience and raising concerns among the people. Initially, reports suggested that the interruptions were due to an ongoing repair work, resulting in the suspension of internet services from 9pm to 6am daily. However, this practice has persisted for nearly 10 consecutive days, impacting numerous areas of Peshawar city and villages along Kohat Road, including Garhi Qamardin, Bahader Kelay, Gulshan Rahman Colony, Hazarkhwani, and several other areas every night. Expressing frustration, a villager named Zulfiqar Khan stated: “We had heard of load-shedding of power and gas. This is something new and nobody has explained as to what is happening as it has triggered concerns among thousands of people.” He urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant agencies to ensure the regular supply of internet services, emphasising that children and youth rely on it for educational purposes, research, staying connected with family and friends, and various other needs, for which they pay significant amounts. The disruption in cellular internet services has not only inconvenienced residents but also underscored the importance of reliable internet connectivity in today’s digital age. Authorities have yet to provide clarity on the cause of the prolonged interruptions, leaving affected individuals seeking answers and solutions to alleviate the inconvenience. “Internet Disruptions Due to Technical Glitches May Continue for 2-3 Months”

Director General of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Ahmed Shamim Pirzada Monday said that recent disruptions in internet services were due to technical glitches and may persist for 2 to 3 months. Addressing a press conference alongside Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Director Operations Waqaruddin Syed, Pirzada explained that a system is being upgraded due to which these disruptions happen. Responding to a question, he also rejected the notion that the said disruptions had anything to do with the online activities of a political party. The caretaker information minister also commented on the matter and said that the disruptions were due to technical issues that involved system installations. The minister also made it clear that it cannot be guaranteed that such an issue wouldn’t happen in the near future. It is pertinent to mention here that social media platforms became inaccessible in Pakistan thrice in a period of just over a month. The first such disruption happened on December 17, the second on January 7, and the most recent on January 20. Interestingly, the disruptions coincided with the pre-announced online activity of a political party. After the latest disruption on January 20, the PTA issued a statement saying that the disruption in internet services was caused by a technical fault.
